Backpacks vs Suitcases: Which Is Better for Travel? (An Honest, Opinionated Guide)

I’ve always been a backpack guy, you know? There’s something appealing about carrying your life on your back, hands-free and not having to deal with the hassle of pulling a suitcase across cobblestone, or mud or dirt. There’s been many situations while traveling where I thought to myself, “Man, I don’t know how I’d do this with a suitcase.” I had to run after trains, catch a connecting flight, hike up grueling steps on the side of a mountain, or trudging on the sand to my accommodation. However, when I reflect on those periods of my life, I was a broke college student who wanted to travel around the world. As I’ve grown older, and now with a career and a partner who has graciously introduced me to a bit of what luxury travel is like, I’ve learned that bringing a suitcase isn’t so bad, especially if you know exactly where you’re going, where you’ll be staying and how you’re getting to and from your accommodation.

Choosing between a backpack and a suitcase might seem like a small decision…but it can completely change how your trip feels. The choice can depend on various factors. Some may have a bad back and can’t carry a backpack or some may not pack as much and bringing a suitcase is a waste of space. Do you want to glide through bustling crowds at train stations, wrestle a broken wheel over cobblestones or take Ibuprofen for your low back spasm?

After years of traveling across Europe, Southeast Asia, and South America here’s the truth: Your luggage choice determines your freedom.

Here’s my insight.

🎒 Backpacks: The Mobility King

Backpacks are for travelers who crave mobility, flexibility, and adventure. And quite honestly, that’s what draws me to using backpacks.

They shine when:

  • You’re changing cities
  • Using trains and buses
  • Walking long distances
  • Traveling internationally
  • Exploring historic towns with cobblestone streets

Pros of Traveling with a Backpack

  1. Mobility is unmatched
    • Stairs? Dirt roads? Narrow streets? Backpacks don’t care. Suitcases panic.
  2. No wheels = no weakness
    • Cobblestone streets in Italy and Spain destroy suitcase wheels daily. With a backpack, you won’t have to worry about dragging your suitcase across historic plazas.
  3. Faster travel days
    • You can:
      • Walk off trains easily
      • Hop on buses
      • Navigate airports faster
      • Avoid dragging luggage through chaos
  4. Forces minimalist packing
    • Backpacks expose overpacking lies. You don’t need 8 shirts for 3 days. You need discipline.

Cons of Backpacks

Let’s be real:

  • Backpacks can be heavy
  • Harder to organize
  • Not great for formal clothes
  • Your back is going to HATE you

Best for:

✔️ Europe
✔️ Asia
✔️ Multi-city trips
✔️ Adventure travel
✔️ Budget travel
✔️ Hostels & Airbnbs

🧳 Suitcases: The Comfort Choice

Suitcases are for travelers who prioritize comfort, organization, and style.

They work best when:

  • Staying in one city
  • Using taxis or rental cars
  • Visiting resorts
  • Traveling for business
  • Bringing nicer clothing

Pros of Traveling with a Suitcase

  1. Easy organization
    • Everything has a place. No digging like a raccoon in a trash bag.
  2. No shoulder pain
    • You roll instead of lift and your spine will approve.
  3. Looks professional
    • Perfect for business trips, weddings, cruises, and luxury hotels.

Cons of Suitcases

  • Cobblestones are a nightmare, but it’s possible
  • Stairs? Get ready to lift or you can drag it down. I’ve seen people do that 😂
  • Broken wheels make it a useless box
  • Public transportation can be difficult, but again, still possible. Crowded trains though like in Japan? Good luck.

Best for:

✔️ Resorts
✔️ Cruises
✔️ One-city trips
✔️ Business travel
✔️ Hotels with elevators
✔️ Car-based travel

Backpack vs Suitcase: Which Is Better?

Here’s my honest opinion: If you plan to be on the move and shifting between cities, backpack wins. Every time.

If your itinerary looks like:

  • Paris → Amsterdam → Berlin
  • Bangkok → Chiang Mai → Luang Prabang
  • Peru → Bolivia → Chile

(These are actually based on trips I’ve done in the past 🙃)

A backpack will save your sanity.

If your trip looks like:

  • Fly in → Hotel, Motel, Holiday Inn → Beach Resort → Cocktails → Fly out

Then go ahead and bring a Suitcase king or queen 👑

My Personal Rule for Choosing Luggage

Choose a Backpack 🎒 if:

  • Visiting 3+ cities
  • Plan on FREQUENTLY use trains or buses
  • Long adventure travel holidays in Europe or Asia

Choose a Suitcase 🧳 if:

  • Staying in one place, maybe two places.
  • Plan on using taxis, ride share or rental cars
  • Traveling for business
  • Going to a resort or cruise
  • Know you’re going to need to packing formal outfits

Final Verdict

Backpacks: freedom, flexibility, and adventure
Suitcases: comfort, organization, and style

There is no wrong answer — only the right tool for the right trip.

Your luggage should support your journey, not slow it down.
